Bovis Lend Lease Named Preferred Tenderer for New Melbourne Markets
Bovis Lend Lease has today been announced by the Victorian Government as preferred tenderer for the design and construction of the new home of the Melbourne Wholesale Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Market.
The project involves the relocation of the existing Melbourne Wholesale Market from Footscray Road in West Melbourne to a new precinct and purpose-built facility at Cooper Street, Epping, in Melbourne’s North. It is being managed by Major Projects Victoria for the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development and is one of the largest infrastructure projects being undertaken by the Victorian Government.
Bovis Lend Lease Australia CEO, Mr Tony Costantino, said the company is delighted to have been selected as preferred tenderer for this major infrastructure project.
“Our expertise in the design and delivery of major, technically complex infrastructure projects was key to our selection. We look forward to working with Major Projects Victoria, stakeholders and the community to create an exciting new facility that will provide greater operational efficiency, a safer work environment and improved sustainability,” he added.
The project represents the continuation of the strong working relationship with the Victorian Government, Major Projects Victoria and Bovis Lend Lease, which has delivered the recently completed Melbourne Recital Centre and MTC Theatre Company Project and is currently completing the new Royal Children’s Hospital redevelopment.
The new facility will incorporate significantly enhanced operational logistics, functionality and an enhanced occupational health and safety environment, and will feature sustainable initiatives to improve its energy and water efficiency.
Following contractual close, works are expected to commence on site by the end of 2009 with the new Melbourne Wholesale Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Market opening in 2012.
